The release of the Amy Grant compilation Her Greatest Inspirational Songs reflects BMG Music's acquisition of rights to the catalog of Word Records, and is the first survey of Grant's music since The Collection in 1986. Amy Grant is the eponymous debut studio album by then-teenage Christian singer Amy Grant, released in 1977 on Myrrh Records. Three songs from the album made Top Ten Christian radio airplay: "Old Man's Rubble", "Beautiful Music", and "What a Difference You've Made". The latter track was made more famous by country singer Ronnie Milsap, as "What a Difference You've Made in My Life".

Grant followed this album with the first of her Christmas albums, which would later be the basis for her holiday shows. In 1984, she released another pop-oriented Christian hit, Straight Ahead, earning Grant her first appearance at the Grammy Awards show in 1985  . Marking the start of Grant's new contract is a career-spanning greatest hits album, with all the songs digitally remastered Grant appeared with Gill on The Oprah Winfrey Show for a holiday special in December 2007
