The Bothy Band was an Irish traditional band active during the mid 1970s. It quickly gained a reputation as one of the most influential bands playing Irish traditional music. Their enthusiasm and musical virtuosity had a significant influence on the Irish traditional music movement that continued well after they disbanded in 1979. The Bothy Band was formed in 1975 by bouzouki player Dónal Lunny, after he left the group Planxty to form his own record company, Mulligan.

1975: The First Album. The Bothy Band is amazing. and the album is as real as it gets. I personally do not like the celtic music that is overly enhanced.

The Bothy Band – an incendiary mix of driving folk-rock rhythms fused with complex contrapuntal layers of harmonic curiosity and robust melodic skill. As individuals and as a collective they drew from the deep well of traditional Irish music, but The Bothy Band were more than just a trad band. Their debut 1975 was a game-changer of an album for music fans and music makers of the time. They opened the door to so much of the innovation that was to come, laying the foundations for groups like Lúnasa, Altan and Dervish who continued and expanded on their blueprint.
The brilliant 1975 debut featured fiddler Tommy Peoples.

Its members were: Matt Molloy - flute and tin whistle; Paddy Keenan - uillean pipes and tin whistle; Dónal Lunny - bouzouki, guitar, and production; Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill - harpsichord, clavinet and vocals; and Mícheál Ó Domhnaill - guitar and vocals. The initial lineup had Paddy Glackin on fiddle as well as Tony Mac Mahon on accordion.
