Sao Paulo Underground is a large, international, genre-mixing ensemble that plays postmodern, psychedelic jazz for the 21st century. Comprising a battery of native Brazilian percussionists, electronica artists, and horn players (including Chicago free jazz trumpeter Rob Mazurek), the group explores the deepest primal rhythms and furthest outer reaches on 2008’s THE PRINCIPLE OF INTRUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS. São Paulo Underground isn’t just an international musical conspiracy. Slated for release on June 4, the album is SPU’s second album for Cuneiform (Mazurek’s new label Infinity Dogs Records is co-releasing the Beija Flors LP with Cuneiform). Following up with 2008’s Principle of Intrusive Relationships (Aesthetics Records), the band expanded to a quartet with Guilherme Granado and drummer Richard Ribeiro. By the time the group recorded its 2011 Cuneiform debut Três Cabeças Loucuras, Ribeiro was gone and SPU took its present form as an expansive trio.
