Complete your Walter Klien - Johannes Brahms collection. Klien's Brahms has drive and energy in the early works, and doesn't fall into the trap of sounding like a miserable old git in the later ones. The Handel variations, in particular, are superb. The sound quality is excellent, far better than the awful CD reissue.

Klien is an excellent pianist in the solo Brahms pieces frequently playing with great beauty. Unfortunately the recording lets him down in some of the louder passages of the music which is why I have rated this group of CDs four rather than 5. If you are unfamiliar with the Opus 76, 116, 117, 118 and 119 sets they contain some incredibly beautiful music.
Walter Klien (27 November 1928 – 10 February 1991) was an Austrian pianist. Klien was born in Graz in 1928. His mother was the artist Erika Giovanna Klien (1900-1957). She emigrated to the United States in 1929, and their only further contact was by correspondence. Klien studied piano with Josef Dichler at the Music Academy in Vienna and with Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. He also studied composition with Paul Hindemith.
