All of the tracks are exquisite, there is not a dull or uninteresting piece in the entire set, and Marshall Brown is able to follow Russell's thoughts beautifully, complementing or contrasting with the clarinetist as need be. Unlike Coltrane or Coleman, Russell could not work without some harmonic underpinning, as is evidenced in his set with Monk when the pianist suddenly stops feeding him chords and he gets lost, so the Coltrane and Coleman pieces on here are harmonized by Brown to keep Russell grounded, but that is the only concession made to the sexagenarian clarinetist.
Discography: Marshall Brown.
Marshall Brown (1920–1983) was a jazz musician and educator. He played trombones and, less often, bass trumpet or euphonium, and even less often electric bass & banjo. He played the valve trombone. Brown was little recorded, and devoted most of his career to education. He earned a music degree from New York University, as a member of the Zeta Psi Fraternity. Brown received some attention for performing in a quartet with Pee Wee Russell in the early 1960s. While Russell was most often associated with Dixieland or swing music, their quartet performed more adventurous, free jazz-oriented pieces, including pieces by Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane. During the 60s Marshall was the resident trombonist in Jimmy Ryan's - noted as a dixieland venue. He also club dated with Luke O'Malley's Irish band during this time.
In 1962, clarinetist Pee Wee Russell, who was closely associated with Dixieland and Eddie Condon even though he had a highly original style, began teaming up with valve trombonist/bass trumpeter Marshall Brown in more modern settings. Utilizing a pianoless quartet, Russell performed music that was a little reminiscent of Gerry Mulligan and often incorporated surprisingly modern songs. The musical partnership lasted for two albums, of which New Groove (originally recorded for Columbia) was the first.
Ask Me Now is the 1966 album by jazz musician Pee Wee Russell and his quartet. Featuring Russell George, the songs were recorded in 1963 but released three years later. Originally released by Impulse, the CD was released by Verve Music Group on released on 11 March, 2003 inventive and swingin'. This disc is excellent, and a must for pee wee fans and fans of great jazz. Baby You Can Count On Me 09. Hackensack 10. Angel Eyes 11.
