First and foremost, on First Flower, Molly Burch sounds much less like Angel Olsen, perhaps the biggest issue plaguing her otherwise strong 2017 debut Please Be Mine. Burch’s striking alto, distinctively slurry and emotive, is put to excellent use here, and more than ever before, she sounds like nobody but herself. First Flower roots its musical influences a bit more plainly in pre-British invasion pop, a slightly obvious move that nonetheless.

Texas-based songwriter Molly Burch has announced her sophomore album, First Flower. The follow-up to her 2017 Please Be Mine debut is due out October 5th via Captured Tracks. Whereas her first album dealt with heartbreak, Burch addresses her own insecurities and anxieties on First Flower.
