All Mod Cons is the third studio album by British band The Jam, released in 1978 by Polydor Records. The title, a British idiom one might find in housing advertisements, is short for "all modern conveniences" and is a pun on the band's association with the mod revival. The album reached No. 6 in the UK Albums Chart. The album was reissued in the US in 1979, with the song "The Butterfly Collector" replacing "Billy Hunt".

Collector's Choice's two-fer of This Is the Modern World/All Mod Cons collects the Jam's energetic - if less inspired - follow-up to In the City and its tour de force third album onto one CD. The disc also includes the singles "News of the World" and "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight," making it a good introduction to some of the Jam's best work for anyone who doesn't own the individual albums.

The Jam had released their sophomore 1977 LP, 'This Is The Modern World' just a couple of weeks after the infamous Sex Pistols record. While songs such as 'Time For Truth' were political, referring to the current Labour prime minister James Callaghan (Uncle Jimmy), The Jam were a very different kind of outfit to the anarchic Sex Pistols. Some critics and fans were confused about where The Jam were coming from with their modish patriotic themes, reminiscent of those found on Village Green Preservation Society or The Who in one of their flag wearing moments. The Jam's commercial and artistic success continued to grow after the change of tack calculated at 'All Mod Cons', culminating in number one chart positions for their final album 'The Gift' and its single 'Town Called Malice'. The Jam had achieved four number one singles by their surprise split in 1982.

Their first album explored obsessions like robotics, Ronald McDonald and cannibalistic apes, making devolution feel like the future. Dubbing himself "the Cappuccino kid," the Jam's Paul Weller channeled punk fervor into a Mod revival, inspired by the Kinks and the Who. Their third album is a snapshot of London life, from "'A' Bomb in Wardour Street" to "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight," a salvo against rightwing punkers. We thought we could be the biggest band in the world," Johnny recalled. In a way, they would be. This is where it began.

Yet while This Is The Modern World was superficially a success, it was largely savaged by the press and, during the first half of 1978, The Jam were plunged into crisis. Frontman and primary songsmith Paul Weller was struck down with writer’s block, while Polydor rejected the band’s next set of demos.

Listen free to The Jam – All Mod Cons (All Mod Cons, To Be Someone (Didn't We Have a Nice Time) and more). The Jam regrouped and refocused for All Mod Cons, an album that marked a great leap in songwriting maturity and sense of purpose.

All Mod Cons (the album that got me into them) saw the band discover production; Weller began to sing with more purity, and their sails were once again billowing. Setting Sons to me is the band's masterpiece, but really, they never did a bad song. I was 14 at the time of All Mod Cons, and The Jam fit me like a glove. Best album from The Jam for me.
