The Rough Guide to the Music of Japan is a world music compilation album originally released in 1999. Part of the World Music Network Rough Guides series, the album presents an eclectic mix of the music of Japan ranging from traditional Japanese music (including Ryukyuan and Ainu music) to J-pop by artists of the 1990s. Liner notes were written by Paul Fisher, a journalist and broadcaster specializing in Japanese music and founder of Far Side Music.

This collection of performances on the Japanese koto in various ensemble settings was part of the low-budget international line introduced by Nonesuch. In some ways this series was an act of extreme generosity that, because of the bargain prices, attracted many curious but penny-pinching listeners to world music. Re-release and repackaging schemes over the years have resulted in confusion, none more than in the case of this album, which upon resurfacing both as a Nonesuch CD release and a Delta CD contained the same title, but not the same material or performers.

The koto (箏) is a Japanese stringed musical instrument derived from the Chinese zheng, and similar to the Mongolian yatga, the Korean gayageum, and the Vietnamese đàn tranh. The koto is the national instrument of Japan. Koto are about 180 centimetres (71 in) length, and made from kiri wood (Paulownia tomentosa). They have 13 strings that are usually strung over 13 movable bridges along the width of the instrument. There is also a 17-string variant

Japan: Geza Music from the Kabuki. Master Shogin Hagiwara, one of the koto performers featured on the album, lost her eyesight when she was six. She entered the Watanabe School, where she studied koto music of the Ikuta-ryu style. Hagiwara was given the degree of koto master and subsequently taught at the Kyoto School for the Blind. The Government later named her Juyo-Mukei-Bunkazai, an important cultural post and one of the great honors for a Japanese artist. Shakuhachi (bamboo-flute) master Kikusui Kofu accompanies the koto artists heard here.

Details about the Japanese music recording: Koto Music of Japan, The. Information may include sound snippets, track names, performers and other details. Music of Six Steps is an "absolute" music consisting of six sections of 52 beats. Though this piece was originally composed for the koto, it later became fashionable to play it on the shamisen (three-stringed guitar-like instrument). The popularity of Rokudan was such that succeeding composers often adapted the melody.
