Pieranunzi - specifically because he brings the great Italian jazz tradition, with its deep reliance on lyricism and harmonic interplay, to the mix - is the only player who could have pulled off the gig. This is a beautifully, movingly wrought album that is indeed a jazz date first, but one that is also not so far removed from the music of Fellini's cinema because of its reliance on impression, subtlety, grace, warm humor, and, of course, elegance. Two sets of liner notes accompany the set, one by Pieranunzi about the session and one from Ira Gitler about the films and Pieranunzi.

Enrico Pieranunzi ‎– Fellini Jazz. All musicians listed on front cover; only Enrico Pieranunzi listed on spine. Recorded in Rome on 3, 4, 5 March 2003 at Forum Music Village. Packaged in standard jewel case with 16-page booklet.

Enrico Pieranunzi (born 5 December 1949) is an Italian jazz pianist. He fuses classical technique with jazz. Pieranunzi, the son of Renata Brillantini and Alvaro Pieranunzi, was encouraged to study music from a young age. His father was a jazz guitarist. He studied classical music until 1973 when he became a Professor of Music, and maintained that post for two years. In 1975 he left his teaching practice and played in trios and small ensembles. He has recorded over 60 albums.

Enrico Pieranunzi, Fellini Jazz. CamJazz, the Italian label that specialises in sidelong glances at classic European movie music from some of the world's best jazz improvisers, has released Rome pianist Enrico Pieranunzi's appraisal of the themes of Nino Rota, who composed for Fellini. It's a fascinating venture in its own right, but also an interesting complement, for those who were there, to Hal Willner's recent Barbican version of the same pursuit with Carla Bley and others. The Barbican show was a programme of alternative takes on Rota, from straight jazz to improv and noise.

Enrico Pieranunzi: Fellini Jazz by Mark Corroto, published on January 10, 2004. Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi continues to make make dream recordings that are so much more than all-star get togethers. This release follows two stellar sessions, Plays Morricone and Current Conditions (both on CAM Jazz), with bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron. Think of Fellini and the name that follows is Nino Rota, who composed music for the director’s films and also Coppola’s Godfather series. Rota draws inspiration from all music to form his unique brand of folk music. This band measures out the composer's vision in satisfying portions.

This is not by any means the first time an Italian jazz musician has taken on the glorious music from Fellin's films. There is something about this music, especially Nino Rota's, that lends itself to jazz interpretation - hardly surprising, since Rota and the others loved and were deeply influenced by jazz - and players as brilliant as Enrico Rava have interpreted it beautifully, with the freedom and lyricism it deserves. But in my opinion, none of them have achieved the perfect synthesis of music and musicians that this recording does.
