Working alone in his bedroom on low-rent gear, Jonathan Bates found his sound on two preliminary EPs before creating A Demonstration of Intellectual Property. These six songs cover more ground than many other artists manage on a full CD, beginning with a disarming, lullaby-like instrumental, "Tinylittle. The songs that follow roll by like a storm front of massed guitar dissonances, ominous electronic noises, and voices that float above the turbulence, all the more painful because of their detachment.

This is not your typical lo-fi album, though, as Jonathan Bates must have one hell of a home recording studio. The album was recorded in his home and sounds as if real studio time was purchased for the final mixing. The first track, Tinylittle,  eases you into the album with a gentle acoustic guitar-driven intro reminiscent of both The Microphones and Her Space Holiday. Fashionably Uninvited,  arguably the albums best track, conjures sounds of The Beta Band at their best. The rest of the album is on par, with intense use of guitars and playful vocals.

Camila Grey (born Camila Cristinna Gutierrez; January 6, 1982) is a Los Angeles based musician currently performing in the duo Uh Huh Her and also the supergroup Summer Moon composed of Nikolai Fraiture (The Strokes), Stephen Perkins (Jane's Addiction), and Noah Harmon (Airborne Toxic Event).
