Shannon and the Clams' debut album, I Wanna Go Home, was released in 2009. In 2011, the group followed up with their sophomore effort, Sleep Talk Their album, Gone by the Dawn, is described by Still in Rock as "the most beautiful manifestation in recent years of what I would call the 'Elvis Presley culture'". Released in 2018, Onion was Shannon and the Clams' first release on Dan Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound label
Shannon and the Clams' third album, 2013's Dreams in the Rathouse, signals a tiny step forward for the trio. Recorded over the course of a year in cool places like a cabin in the woods and Nobunny's practice space, the album sounds tougher and stronger than previous efforts, Shannon Shaw's vocals have a more powerful presence, and the songs are better overall. Dreams just seems to put it all together in a way those albums didn't quite accomplish. From the opening "Hey Willy," which gets things started in a happy, bouncy fashion with some excellent guitar and vocal work from Cody Blanchard, to the blown-out girl group in a wind tunnel "I Know," which ends the album with one of Shaw's best vocals, the record is all high points with precious few dips in quality.

Oakland trio Shannon and the Clams have a broad musical vocabulary that belies their simple, trad setup. Their sound contains lo-fi's distorted treble, the gruff tumble of rockabilly, the soaring heights of R&B balladry, and the weirdness of mid-60s psychedelia. Their albums have the feel of a freeform AM station whose DJs and programmers get their jollies from being gleefully unpredictable, the kind that wouldn’t think twice about following up a tender oldie like Oh Louie with a punkabilly romp called Cat Party.

Sure, the easy jangle of the guitar, the tambourine shimmy, and the light percussion all fit the tropes to a tee, but Shaw’s rich and gritty delivery strides across the top, carrying the song. Immediately following that bit of sunshine is Bed Rock. I’m never going to get out of bed, I’m going to stay here ’til I’m dead, sings a suddenly demonic voice leading the band through some lightly evil garage thumping. Though Bed Rock jars from the easy-going surf vibe that the album opens on, the Clams are able to find their footing on non-beach songs. Now she’s gone, I miss her so, they moan to close out In The River, following some Joplin verses and rich horn bellowing. Waltzing ballad Unlearn shimmers and sways on military snare rolls and Shaw’s most fragile moments on the disc, but even here she builds to a wild growl.
