Complete your Lew Tabackin collection. In the late 1970s, Tabackin recorded Rites Of Pan, a set that exclusively features him on flute. While his flute playing has often been featured on Asian-influenced material (and half of the material on this album is in that vein), such numbers as an uptempo Be-Bop, Jitterbug Waltz and Speak Low, serve as evidence that he is a very impressive bop flutist too. Also featuring pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi, drummer Shelly Manne and either John Heard or Bob Daugherty on bass, Rites Of Pan is one of Lew Tabackin finest showcases on flute. Liner notes indicate this LP fulfilled a wish Lew had to do a "just flutes" album. 1977 and February 1978.

Lewis Barry Tabackin (born March 26, 1940) is an American jazz tenor saxophonist and flutist. He is married to pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi with whom he has co-led large ensembles since the 1970s. Tabackin started learning flute at age 12, followed by tenor saxophone at age 15. He has cited Al Cohn and Coleman Hawkins as influences on saxophone, while his flute role models include classical players such as William Kincaid, Julius Baker, and Jean-Pierre Rampal.

Rites of Pan. ( - Inner City. As impressive as any performer on the instrument, Tabackin's startling technique and pronounced vibrato tone do not supersede his wealth of ideas and how he approaches music with a worldview that is similar to no other peer. There's a bit of myth/science going on here, using ancient dialects.
