Willie Wright (born William C. Gathright, July 7, 1939) is an American soul singer and songwriter. He was born in Bayland, Yazoo County, Mississippi. In his teens he sang with friends George Bragg and Harry Jensen in a Harlem, New York City doo-wop group, The Persuaders. Later, the three formed the Willie Wright Trio. Wright then began performing as a solo singer and songwriter in clubs in Greenwich Village, and also played flute with The Three Degrees.

Folk songs are an important part of our culture. They are often very enjoyable to hear and can transmit facts and ideas to listeners. Traditional folk songs generally come from a culture that no longer exists, but they are still interesting. They allow us to glimpse a time that has passed but that may still influence us. In fact in the unlikely event that anyone ever asked me to sing, I would choose one of these songs as I know the words of an awful lot of them. So I suppose they are the folk music of my generation.
