The brief accompanying notes offer an explanation as to why each album has been considered important. The organization of the list is by date of release, ranging from Run-D. s eponymous debut in 1984 to Jay-Z's 2001 album, The Blueprint. Since for the period of 1979–1983, hip hop was a music for 12" singles rather than albums, the absence of old school hip hop from the list has been compensated for by providing it with its own section of notable releases.
Drake raps, 901 Shelby Drive, look alive, look alive, and just like that, Memphis hip-hop was back on the mainstream’s radar. After failing to get Trippie Redd on his early-’18 smash God’s Plan, the 6 God threw his first alley-oop of the year when he introduced the lethal combination of childhood friends BlocBoy JB and Tay Keith to the world via the minimalist Look Alive. For an album about getting older and trying to untangle the confusions of love, sex, fame and responsibility, that’s the point; a side-effect of maturity can be less certainty - or rather, the only certainty is the inevitability of uncertainty.
With all due respect to Kenny Beats, 2018’s prodigal son of rap bangers, the undeniable power of Mo Bamba, and the acclaimed, riotous works of Travis Scott and Playboi Carti, no song made me want to absolutely lose my shit like Buckets. Swae and Jxmmi turn in verses that force you to sing along, Future’s guest feature is one of the best of the year, and the head-rattling interplay between Mike WiLL’s 808s and y-off-beat keys makes me want to jack up the volume until I blow my eardrums out.
This is a LONG album, but there are few, if any, wasted moments. This is smooth, jazzy Hip Hop at its finest, with live instrumentation and exceptional lyricism – true brilliance from Philly’s legendary Roots crew. Top tracks: Clones What They Do Concerto Of The Desperado Section. Mercury raps is roughed then God just shown like taps, Red and white Wally’s that match, bend my baseball hat, Doing forever sh like pissing out the window on turnpikes, Robbing n for leathers, high swiping on dirt bikes. (Daytona 500).
But the album still had some fun bangers on it, like the undeniable, anthemic otIt" and the minimal, simplistic beat perfection of "Tom Ford. The album feels big, filled with earth-shaking, raucous bangers that ride through a variety of tempos and beats within each song. And there's a bit of everything: bhangra influences, baile funk, dancehall, dub, reggae, electro, house.
The album is a reckoning for the masters, a confrontation of the ruling class. Canny raps about restoring and preserving a reputation double as smart business moves, while the Brooklyn icon makes teachable moments out of his most public failings. He raps as well as he has this decade, appraising his empire, his mistakes, and what they could have cost him.
Non-album single, 1996 One of hip-hop’s most powerful mourning anthems put Midwest hip-hop on the map. At the time, Bone Thugs had lost several loved ones, including Eazy E, who signed them in 1993. To this day, when we perform it, said Krayzie Bone, there will be, like, 20 people in the crowd crying. Q-Tip raps that Tribe flows in layers. Indeed they did. And a new artistic bar was being set.
Yes, raps about his watches and cars are still prevalent throughout, but so were moments of impressive and surprising introspection and maturity like on the poignant Young Black America. It was a refreshing journey into the mind of Meek, a 30-year-old man slowly figuring life out one mistake at a time and seemingly learning from each and every one of them. Enter Ransom 2, the debut studio album that showcases him on top of his game as a producer.
