Popular Mechanics is the debut album by English experimental rock band Piano Magic. It was originally released in 1997 on I/Ché Trading records and then again by Rocket Girl in 2003. It was recorded in North London by founding members Glen Johnson and Dominic Chennell with contributions from passing friends. At the time, Johnson and Chennell claimed the album to be influenced by the early music of Kraftwerk and Brothers Quay animation films.

The self-proclaimed Kraftwerk and drum 'n' bass influences are disguised as well: to be sure, there's a certain antique thrust to the badly spoken word "Wrong French" or a Kid 606-like junkyard scream to the "Metal Coffee" red herring, but it's how mainman Glen Johnson strives to "aim for the heart" that really makes the album worthwhile. This is splayed-out Krautrock dub with a newly found sense of compassion. Much like the reconstructionist vibe of comic book writer Kurt Busiek, Piano Magic seem intent in rediscovering a childhood that never.

After yet another abstract instrumental interlude, Freckled Robot, and a more substantial instrumental vignette, Soft Magnets, mixing different kinds of electronic sounds, the closer, You've Lost Your Footing in This World, was another charming Brian Eno-esque ambient atmosphere. This was certainly and educational album, experimenting (elegantly) with different formats and styles, from dissonance to ambience to samples, but hardly cohesive or meaningful for the listener.
