Coleman Hawkins Encounters Ben Webster is studio album recorded on October 16, 1957, by Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster, accompanied by a rhythm section led by Oscar Peterson. In the United Kingdom, the album was released with the title Blue Saxophones. Blues for Yolande" (Coleman Hawkins) – 6:44. It Never Entered My Mind" (Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart) – 5:47. La Rosita" (Paul Dupont, Allan Stuart) – 5:02. You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To" (Cole Porter) – 4:15.
These aren't encounters in the confrontational sense, but a merger of great musical minds.
Album originally released in 1959. This session was recorded in Hollywood, October 16th 1957.
Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster first met at a Kansas City jam session at which Hawkins finally encountered his match in local tenors Webster, Herschel Evans, and Lester Young. The all-night meeting has become the stuff of legend (and a continuous thread in Robert Altman's film Kansas City, though there it's reduced to two tenors). Recorded by Norman Granz, this 1957 meeting supports the two with fine accompaniment that includes Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, and Herb Ellis . My only complaint:it's too short. Recorded back when it was just 40 minutes of time for an album.
Studio album by Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster.
