Erroll Garner – Soliloquy. Label: Columbia – CL 1060. Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Mono.
From the Columbia Records vaults comes a straight reissue of two LPs by Erroll Garner, Soliloquy being a solo piano date from 1957, and Erroll Garner with a trio circa 1953. Unbelievably, the solo piano sides are muddier in their digital reproduction, while the older trio date sounds crisp and clean.
He also composed two originals on the spot, the dreamy ballad "No More Time" and the adventurous "Soliloquy. This outstanding and fairly difficult to find release is long overdue to be reissued. 1 You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To Erroll Garner 6:17. 2 No More Time Erroll Garner 6:28. 3 I Surrender, Dear Erroll Garner 6:46. 4 If I Had You Erroll Garner 4:25. 5 Don't Take Your Love from Me Erroll Garner 7:34. 6 Soliloquy Erroll Garner 5:58. Erroll Louis Garner (June 15, 1923 – January 2, 1977; some sources say b. 1921) was an American jazz pianist and composer known for his swing playing and ballads. His best-known composition, the ballad "Misty", has become a jazz standard. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6363 Hollywood Blvd.
Erroll Garner had a long and exceptional career as one of the giants of Jazz Piano. Other than some of his earliest and latest recorded work, his output compares favorably with anyone in that field. The question remains; what was his best work? I believe you will find it on this album. The first album on this single was probably Garner's last solo piano recording, SOLILOQUY. It clearly demonstrates how much piano this "colossus among pygmies" could play. Check out the opener of the album, "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" a great Cole Porter standard. Garner is in brilliant form here with a great intro and infectious swing from the beginning. He also shows how well he commanded his dynamic levels in any performance; he was a master of musical dynamics and contrasts. Since he could not read a note of music, key modulations never bothered him.
