Missa Papae Marcelli, or Pope Marcellus Mass, is a mass sine nomine by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. It is his best-known mass, and is frequently taught in university courses on music. It was sung at the Papal Coronation Masses (the last being the coronation of Paul VI in 1963). The Missa Papae Marcelli consists, like most Renaissance masses, of a Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus/Benedictus, and Agnus Dei, though the third part of the Agnus Dei is a separate movement (designated "Agnus II").

Conducted by Hans-Günther Marner, the performances of the Marian Mass K 275 and K 194 date from December 1966. By virtue of their smaller scale and better recordings, they’re far more listenable. There are numerous recordings of the Missa Papae Marcelli, and most of them are awful. Pro Cantione Antiqua's performance is sturdy and tuneful. It's not, to my ears, the ultimate interpretation, but it's probably the best around. Not all the compositions in the box are masses.
Musicology: Missa brevis in C, . 20 ('Spatzenmesse'). Key: C Year: 1775 Genre: Mass, Requiem Pr. Instrument: Chorus/Choir.
One of his most important works, the Missa Papae Marcelli (Pope Marcellus Mass), has been historically associated with erroneous information involving the Council of Trent. Bach studied and hand-copied Palestrina's first book of Masses, and in 1742 wrote his own adaption of the Kyrie and Gloria of the Missa sine nomine. Felix Mendelssohn placed him in the pantheon of the greatest musicians, writing, "I always get upset when some praise only Beethoven, others only Palestrina and still others only Mozart or Bach.
