An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump is a 1768 oil-on-canvas painting by Joseph Wright of Derby, one of a number of candlelit scenes that Wright painted during the 1760s. The painting departed from convention of the time by depicting a scientific subject in the reverential manner formerly reserved for scenes of historical or religious significance.

Air pumps were developed in the 17th century and were relatively familiar by Wright's day. The artist's subject is not scientific invention, but a human drama in a night-time setting. The bird will die if the demonstrator continues to deprive it of oxygen, and Wright leaves us in doubt as to whether or not the cockatoo will be reprieved. The painting reveals a wide range of individual reactions, from the frightened children, through the reflective philosopher, the excited interest of the youth on the left, to the indifferent young lovers concerned only with each other

Experiment on a Bird in an Air Pump.

Experiment" makes use of a play-within-a-play motif as some of the 1799 characters work on mounting a little production. There's also a tip of the hat to the epistolary novel as letters between two characters are read as part of the dialogue. Some of the issues addressed in the play are gender roles, creativity, class oppression, "Englishness" (. English ethnic/national identity), cross-cultural contact, the role of the scientist in society, scientific ethics, and female beauty standards. An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump - Joseph Wright of Derby, 1768. 27 2. 6 months ago. Holidays are a funny thing. Been thinking lately about what I want. In life, in my writing and creative processes, in my work (the money kind), and in a man. I’ve kind of given up on dating, it’s so exhausting. Whether it’s just not being able to find anyone, finding someone I’m interested in and then they disappear into thin air, or actually talking with someone and they turn out to have extreme fundamental differences from me, it feels like I’m wasting my breath. I love love, I miss it, but is it worth it? What do I WANT? .
