Document is the fifth studio album by American rock band . released on September 1, 1987 by . It was the first album by the band to be produced by Scott Litt. s first album to be co-produced both by the band and Scott Litt; this was a collaboration that continued through the productions of Green, Out of Time, Automatic for the People, Monster, and New Adventures in Hi-Fi.

Ironically, Document is a stranger, more varied album than its predecessor, but co-producer Scott Litt - who would go on to produce every . album in the following decade - is a better conduit for the band than Don Gehman, giving the group a clean sound without sacrificing their enigmatic tendencies.

But Document is Buck's album, from the chiming fanfare that opens "Finest Worksong" to the sludgy trudge that closes "Oddfellows Local 151". He sounds intent on summing up more than three decades of rock guitar in these 40 minutes. Jangle was only the base from which to venture into surf, post-punk, country rock, even a little rockabilly. at their most rock: more targeted than Green but less self-conscious than Monster. However, saying Document is their weakest indie-label release is like saying Mothra was the least of Godzilla's foes: That big bug could still level Tokyo. Even five albums into their career, . managed to sound both confident and unsettled, always pushing into new territory but galvanized by what they could do together. Whether they knew it at the time, Document represents a band readying itself for the spotlight as though preparing for a fight.

The commemorative release also adds new liner notes by journalist David Daley, with the 2CD package presented in a lift-top box with four postcards. s fifth studio album, Document was recorded by vocalist Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and drummer Bill Berry at Nashville s Sound Emporium. The first of several .

Document is the second album in the remarkable run of records that . put out in the late 80s and early 90s. There are very few bands anywhere who can offer five albums of such a consistently high quality as Lifes Rich Pageant, Document, Green, Out of Time and Automatic For The People. It's not often appreciated today, but these albums had a huge impact on rock music. Document was an early part of that journey. If Pageant is the sound of . learning who they are and that they can put it out there for everyone, then Document is the sound of them taking it to a louder and more ambitious level. It's bigger in every respect: louder, lyrically clearer, more overtly political but also more oblique and stylistically bold.

This release does sound good. I recently found a sealed copy for cheap also and was pleased with the sound. Doesn't have the clarity, warmth and dynamics that the MFSL pressing has though imo.

Found a mint (sealed!!) copy of this for $4.99 at a local Half Price Books yesterday. Amazing thick, flat vinyl and a superb remaster that is every bit as good as the Mobile Fidelity pressing that came a few years later.
