The assemblage in one box of Oh Mercy/Time Out of Mind/Love and Theft is part of Sony's "collection" series. It's difficult to know who the targeted audience is. Certainly, hardcore fans have these albums already, and it's difficult to know why newbies would choose these three instead of the earlier "classic" offerings. But the music business is a curious animal and follows its own instincts - or those of its competitors. Dylan's Oh Mercy, released in 1987, was his first great record since Slow Train Coming, and his last until Time Out of Mind. Both sets were produced by Daniel Lanois. Love and Theft was released in 2001 and garnered nearly universal acclaim.
Modern Times is the 32nd studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on August 29, 2006 by Columbia Records. The album was the third work (following Time Out of Mind and "Love And Theft") in a string of albums by Dylan that garnered wide acclaim from critics. It continued its predecessors' tendencies toward blues, rockabilly and pre-rock balladry, and was self-produced by Dylan under the pseudonym "Jack Frost".
Bob Dylan released ‘Love and Theft’ on September 11, 2001. But despite its unfortunate arrival on Sept. 11, 2001, Love and Theft, Dylan's 31st album, turned out to be better than its predecessor and just as significant in the singer-songwriter's late-career comeback. Time Out of Mind arrived with few expectations four years earlier. The albums leading up to it ranged from pretty good (1989's Oh Mercy) to mostly forgettable (1992's Good as I Been to You). Time Out of Mind was no fluke, and Dylan would continue this streak with 2006's Modern Times, which faced even more charges of plagiarism upon its release. Love and Theft turned out to be Dylan's highest-charting album - it peaked at No. 5 - since Slow Train Coming reached No. 3 in 1979. In the years since its release, Love and Theft has become a watershed Dylan album, maybe even more so than Time Out of Mind.
~ Overall, Time out of Mind is one of the strongest albums of Dylan’s career. It doesn’t come close to his mid-60s trilogy, or Blood on the Tracks, but its easily on that second tier of Dylan albums, right beside The Times They Are A-Changin’ and Love & Theft. I bought Love and Theft and my favourite track was Missippi which was an outtake from this album! Listening to the samples from this CD it sound's like I would probably enjoy it alot. The only sad thing about his later cd's is that his voice which in his youth was already a little unacessible, is now very unacessible to anyone who doesn't have an open mind or can't get past it and listen to the words. I for one like his voice these days, although it can get bad in some live videos I've seen.
At the beginning of Time Out of Mind, Bob Dylan finds himself in the same dead-day world as on 1964's "One Too Many Mornings. By now, though, he can't be bothered to romanticize the street and the distant dogs' barking; he can only moan about how sick he is of love, of himself. Saying it seems to give him the strength to go on, and go on he does, over 11 songs that are among his most plainspoken and musically eloquent. You may find this way different for Dylan the way I did the first time I listened to this album.
When work began on Love and Theft in May 2001, guitarist Larry Campbell was among the first to sense the album would be something special. Right after they’d recorded Things Have Changed, Dylan played Campbell chord changes for one of his new songs, Po’ Boy. They were relatively sophisticated changes for a Bob Dylan song, Campbell recalls. Taking control seemed to suit Dylan, even as he was prepping to follow up a landmark like Time Out of Mind. Bob was a little bit more relaxed when we did Love and Theft, Meyers says. When an executive from Columbia stopped by to hear some tracks, Dylan kept alluding to an acoustic version of Cry a While that didn’t exist just to yank the executive’s chain.
Today we explore Bob Dylan’s masterful comeback, 1997’s Time Out of Mind. A portrait of the sometimes-awful truth about life and love, Time Out of Mind stands alongside Mark Rothko’s so-called Black Paintings, conceived in poor health just before he killed himself, for its ability to stand at the lip of an abyss and stare into it. If you look long enough at the Rothko or listen closely to the Dylan, the most unexpected shapes will eventually stumble out of the dark. Dylan begins in a bout of denial. At the start of Love Sick, he shuffles through empty streets in the rain, a tangle of warped guitar, haunted organs, and faint drums aptly framing his bleak mood
