Recorded over 40 years ago, In Memory of Robert Johnson, remains a timeless tribute to its namesake. Robert Johnson was an American blues singer-songwriter and musician. This biography profiles his childhood, music career, achievements and timeline. Robert Johnson was an American blues singer-songwriter and musician. He died on August 16, 1938 after drinking poisoned whisky allegedly given to him by friends of a man on whose wife he showed too much interest. The exact location of his grave is, unfortunately, officially unknown. The character that Chris Thomas King played in the film, ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’, written, and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, of Tommy Johnson is loosely based on this legendary Blues singer.
Robert Johnson – the root source for a whole generation of blues and rock and roll musicians. The most emotionally committed of all blues-singers. The greatest singer, the greatest writer. Johnson was far from the only bluesman who sang about the devil, Skip James, Tampa Red, Lonnie Johnson, Joe Williams and Peetie Wheatstraw all sang of Satan – the latter even nicknamed himself The Devil’s Son-in-law after one of his 1931 recordings. Was Robert Johnson a genius songwriter? His music is brilliant, his delivery and his guitar playing were unique and rightly revered, but the songs he recorded are often derivative of other earlier recordings.
