When Leary's comedy album No Cure for Cancer was released, Leary was accused of stealing Hicks's act and material. The friendship ended abruptly as a result. According to the book, True said upon hearing a tape of Leary's album No Cure for Cancer, "Bill was furious. All these years, aside from the occasional jibe, he had pretty much shrugged off Leary's lifting. Comedians borrowed, stole stuff and even bought bits from one another.

No Cure for Cancer is wildly uneven. About 35 minutes of standup are sandwiched between four novelty songs. The best one, "Asshole," is a funny diatribe set to acoustic rhythm guitar. It achieved some success in a censored form, which robbed it of impact. Parts of the standup monologue don't work, and occasionally the deadly silence of the audience proves it. He starts rolling when he talks about sex, drugs, and music as they related to 1970s culture.
No Cure for Cancer is drawn mostly from Leary's one-man show of the same name, which is full of tough love for '90s therapy-addicted crybabies, and no-holds-barred advice for idiots (which is to say, anyone who gets in Leary's way). Head for the hills when he picks up a guitar, as he does on several ill-advised comedic songs here, but listen up when Leary's straight talk makes perfect (and hilarious) sense. Then "No Cure For Cancer" came out in 1993, which Hicks saw as a blatant ripoff of his act; friendship over. Hicks died of pancreatic cancer in 1994, and Leary rose to the higher echelons of comedy. Ergo - the theory goes - if there were only an actual cure for cancer, Hicks would be a star, and Leary would be chain smoking his way through Lindsay Lohan biopics on obscure cable channels.
