Esiste però un altro Avishai Cohen, che suona il contrabbasso. E qui siamo di fronte ad un musicista dal suono sontuoso, possente, con una pulsazione ritmica vigorosa, capace di sfumature insospettabili nel suo alter ego elettrico. Questa ampia introduzione per dire che in As Is, registrato dal vivo al Blue Note, le due anime del musicista israeliano si svelano con pari spazio e con chiara evidenza. L'album, sempre formalmente impeccabile, si muove dunque tra alti e bassi, risultando emotivamente altalenante in funzione della modalità espressiva adottata. Nella confezione, troverete un CD per l'ascolto tradizionale, ed un DVD con gli stessi brani (salvo qualche eccezione). Entrambi, con gli stessi pregi e difetti.

Bassist Avishai Cohen is a true virtuoso on both the electric and acoustic bass and, quite naturally, his compositions are extremely strong rhythmically. The band consists of his working trio, keyboardist Sam Barsh and drummer Mark Giulliana, to which saxophonist Jimmy Greene and trumpeter Diego Urcola have been added. That Barsh and Giulliana have been with Cohen awhile can be heard in the way they navigate his intricate rhythms and changing measure and phrase lengths. The tightness of the band is in constant tension, however, with the virtuosity of Cohen, who is so adept and secure that he draws attention to himself without working up a sweat, even when he is playing the role of accompanist. Whether this will be disconcerting to the listener is something else, and many might find an extra energy created by the bass being so up front; many in the audience appear to have.

Israel-born Avishai Cohen made quite a splash in 1992 after moving to NY City and has since become one of the more important contemporary voices in Jazz. Although the CD is chock full of beautiful bass solo and wonderful grooves, it’s really the musicality & cohesiveness of the band as a whole that stands out. The quartet (quintet on the song Etude with the addition of trumpeter Diego Urcola) nimbly navigates and interacts with each other while staying true to Cohen’s tricky (yet always enjoyable and tangible) compositions.

1, 2006, at The Blue Note, New York. This is a great band with cool tunes and it's well captured. The bass is mixed a little too heavy but that's gonna happen when it's the bass players band.
