Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk is the only posthumous album of polished studio tracks and demos recorded by American singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley. Buckley was dissatisfied with material recorded in the summer of 1996 and early in 1997 and continued working on demo recordings to refine his sound. The album was to be titled My Sweetheart, the Drunk, but was never finished, as the rest of the band were traveling to meet Buckley at the time of his death

Sketches for My Sweetheart The Drunk is a compilation of scrapped songs and unfinished demos recorded by Jeff Buckley in preparation for his sophomore album. It was released on May 26, 1998, a year after he drowned in the Mississippi River. Buckley used the title My Sweetheart The Drunk throughout the songwriting and demo-laying process. As the release is mostly unfinished, Sketches Of was added to the title, a small way to stress the incompleteness of the project. The twenty-track release incorporates newly-written songs alongside tracks from a scrapped album

Jeff Buckley was a mess of contradictions: a perfectionist who believed in spontaneity, a man who was at once humble and vain, a musician who shunned his father's tumultuous legacy while creating one of his own. These are some of the reasons why he took his time writing and recording the material for his second album, laboring over many songs for months at a time. Given such painstaking methods, it shouldn't have been a surprise that recording was an equally fastidious process

03 Opened Once Jeff recorded this track himself, in the studio. The beginning of this track is almost 'Buckley of old', until we reach the chorus, which is differently graceful to anything on Grace. This track flows beautifully, and it is a really good soft track. The overdubbed vocals at the end are brilliant. 04 Nightmares by the Sea The spookiest track on the album, and one of my favourites. The line "stay with me under these waves tonight" gets me every time. My Sweetheart The Drunk" was going to be Jeff coming into his own, truly. The resulting "Sketches" of an album, are shadows of brilliance, and in many cases are brilliant all by themself. Most of the love songs on here are about Jeff's long time girlfriend Rebecca Moore. I love the first disc alot more than the second, but it is all good. If I were to rate the discs seperately Disc 1 would recieve a 5/5, and Disc 2 a 4/5. I give the whole album a . /5.

His lyrics and the convulsive operatic dynamics of his singing were thrilling evocations of long black shadows exploding into daybreak. A restless, demanding spirit, Buckley had an almost pathological aversion to pop convention; he craved both immaculate perfection and naked revelation in his music.

Buckley had a trove of material prepared for his next album. Powerful, impassioned and haunting, are a sadly fitting legacy-sketches of what might have been. Exclusive discount for Prime members. In my opinion, I think the first disk is his best work he ever recorded. Released after his death, the songs on this album were to be recorded for an album titled My Sweetheart the Drunk. I always wonder how it would have been if Jeff was to actually record the album. My favorite track is Vancouver. His lyrics are beautiful and his composing and playing is masterful. The second disk is a couple of different versions of songs on disk 1 but the rest are songs that he recorded in private that I don't know if he would've wanted released to the general public. It kind of seems like the record company just wanted to release the album as a double disk so they just put a bunch of stuff onto disk 2 to cash in on a legend.
