Recording: February 1980, Orchestra Hall, Chicago. It has all of the famed Chicago virtuosity but also a welcome attention to detail and willingness to savor a phrase that you almost never find with Solti’s Chicago Mahler. It’s great to hear a coda to the second movement that for once does not sound anti-climactic. We expect the horn playing in the scherzo to be stunning, and so it is, but the music also has grace, charm, and plenty of atmosphere at an appropriately relaxed basic tempo that, as you can hear, leaves plenty of space for the big moments to expand
This album has an average beat per minute of BPM (slowest/fastest tempos:, BPM). Tracklist Symphony No. 5, Overture 1812 (Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Daniel Barenboim). 5 in E minor, Op. 64: II. Andante cantabile, con alcuna licenza.
The Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) was founded by Theodore Thomas in 1891. The ensemble makes its home at Orchestra Hall in Chicago and plays a summer season at the Ravinia Festival. The music director is Riccardo Muti, who began his tenure in 2010. The CSO is one of five American orchestras commonly referred to as the "Big Five". In 1890, Charles Norman Fay, a Chicago businessman, invited Theodore Thomas to establish an orchestra in Chicago.
Works: Symphony No. Performer: Chicago SO/Daniel Barenboim. At the time Barbirolli made his now-celebrated recording of Mahler’s Fifth in 1969, no one could have believed that the work would become a calling-card for every orchestra in the world – or that the rough edges of Barbirolli’s exciting quest would be more or less ironed out in the process. If in some cases the sense of discovery has disappeared too, that’s certainly not the case with the Barenboim/Chicago partnership. This is progress indeed in the cut and thrust of the turbulent second and fifth movements.
