The New Orleans Rhythm Kings, a very significant early classic jazz group, broke up permanently in 1925. The name was revived during 1934-35 for three sessions that included the NORK's original trombonist George Brunies. Those 13 titles are joined by four songs from a Wingy Manone session dating from the same period on this Lp (plus a previously unreleased version of "Royal Garden Blues") released by the Australian Swaggie label.
recording dates A1 to B2 September 12, 1934 B3 to B6 February 20, 1935.
The New Orleans Rhythm Kings (NORK) were one of the most influential jazz bands of the early to mid-1920s. The band included New Orleans and Chicago musicians who helped shape Chicago jazz and influenced many younger jazz musicians. The New Orleans Rhythm Kings in its earliest stages was the creation of the drummer Mike "Ragbaby" Stevens, solely in that he sent the first telegram to Albert Brunies about going to Chicago to form a band and find better gigs than New Orleans had to offer.

This site contains over 1000 songs from this era in Real Audio 3 format, as well as hundreds of biographies and discographies of Jazz musicians. In 1934 and 1935 two recording sessions took place that revived the New Orleans Rhythm Kings name, but George Brunies was the only original memeber of the band to take part in the sessions.
The New Orleans Rhythm Kings were one of the hottest jazz bands of the early 1920s, and a strong influence on many later musicians, including Bix Beiderbecke, Muggsy Spanier, Mezz Mezzrow, and Benny Goodman. Best known for their 1923 integrated recording session with Jelly Roll Morton, the NORK’s smooth, swinging style signaled a departure from the raucous novelty sound of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band and its imitators. Another hallmark of the band was its emphasis on solo performances, while traditional New Orleans jazz was still heavily dependent on ensemble playing. Help improve the New Orleans Rhythm Kings page.
