Cymande were one of the most unusual and original acts on the . R&B scene in the '70s. In a musical community that generally took its cues from America, Cymande embraced . styles soul and funk, but also folded in large portions of reggae, jazz, and African rhythms, and their sound was subtle but sinewy, full of groove but also thoughtful and literate - music that could inspire dancing or a spirited conversation.

Cymande came seemingly out of nowhere in the early seventies, released three albums over as many years and disappeared again bar a late and lacklustre release on Paul Winley records in 1981. What do you expect from a reunion 40 years after their hat-trick? Not much, to be honest.

The 10-track album, titled A Simple Act of Faith, sees the band reunite with their original producer John Schroeder, who discovered the band in a Soho nightclub during a rehearsal in 1971. Cymande had been dormant for nearly 40 years until 2011 when they got back in the studio, and some of those initial recording sessions appear on the new album. The legendary funk group was formed in 1971 in London by musicians from Guyana, Jamaica and Saint Vincent.

In the build-up to the release of A Simple Act Of Faith, Cymande play several shows in the UK and on the continent. These ten new songs were recorded in the UK, with the first sessions dating back to 2011. But despite its protracted development, the album boasts a unity which harks back to their 70s heyday!
