A list of The Needle Drop's best music of 2015. See which albums are sitting at the top of this year's charts.
This is a list of the best-selling albums by year in the United States. Billboard magazine began publishing year-end lists for album sales in 1956. Until 1991, the Billboard album chart was based on a survey of representative retail outlets that determined a ranking, not a tally of actual sales. Weekly surveys and year-end charts by Billboard and other publications such as now defunct Cash Box magazine sometimes differed
Picking the best rock albums is pretty much an impossible task. The band were furious with their label in the US, who didn’t like the band’s previous Dirty Deeds album and were poised to drop them. There was always a siege mentality about that band, remembers bassist Mark Evans. Close to 40 years on, Van Halen’s debut album has lost none of its shine, nor any of its importance. Before it, hard rock was in serious danger of becoming staid and lifeless. Rolling out his vintage Marshalls and plugging in his hot-rodded Stratocaster, Edward provided an early glimpse of what he would call his brown sound.
If you had told me in 1991 that, 25 years later, I would be prefacing a list on shoegaze, I would probably have told you it would never happen. Few of these bands paid even the slightest, fleeting lip service to commerciality. The whole set was epic, faultless, but one song stood out in particular: a warped, staggering guitar voyage that seemed to encompass the quintessence of psychedelia. Building elliptical loops. A reverbed synchromesh of vocals, bass, drums, and guitar. Looming to unholy crescendos, then, devastatingly, snatching them away. Delaware, the debut album by Boston’s Drop Nineteens, has a confessional and poetic aura that’s completely in line with the alt-rock of the era. Singers/guitarists Greg Ackell and Paula Kelley’s assertive-yet-sweet vocals intertwine seamlessly around lyrics of mournful youths and angelic first loves.
It was 50 years ago that the Beatles‘ released their first album, Please Please Me. In honor of that world-changing LP, we’ve compiled a list of the 100 Greatest Debut Albums of All Time. A note on how we made the list: Albums got docked points if the artist went on to far greater achievements (which is why Please, Please Me and Greetings from Asbury Park, great as they are, didn’t made the Top 10); conversely, we gave a little extra recognition to great debut albums that the artist never matched (hello, Is This. Lady Gaga Interscope, 2009. By the spring of 2009, though, Germanotta, aka Lady Gaga, was famous indeed.
Turn on, tune in, drop out" is a counterculture-era phrase popularized by Timothy Leary in 1966. In 1967, Leary spoke at the Human Be-In, a gathering of 30,000 hippies in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco and phrased the famous words, "Turn on, tune in, drop out". It was also the title of his spoken word album recorded in 1966.
And best of all, putting out singles is fun. But there’s still more PR power in releasing albums. So singles do have their drawbacks. The deeper dive - This follow-up single comes out between the lead single and the album, and it provides further context for your new music. The B-side - Once your album has been out for a few months, you can put out singles from the same recording session that didn’t make it onto the album. The bonus content - After the big album splash, you want to maintain momentum on streaming platforms. In the year following your album release, it’s good to put out several bonus tracks, such as remixes, alternate mixes, demos, or acoustic takes. Yes, part of the benefit of singles is that they’re low pressure and you can drop them quickly. But don’t be in TOO much of a rush.
