Jean Michel Jarre, a countryman of Jacques Cousteau's, composed and performed an e-music opus in honor of the oceanographer. En Attendant Cousteau (aka Waiting for Cousteau) is a departure from Jarre's usual format. This disc has three tracks that are longer than his normal tracks. They are between six and nine minutes. The fourth track is a major work, clocking in at 47 minutes. That track, "En Attendant Cousteau," is an epic minimalist creation. This is groundbreaking stuff, an unusual mode for Jarre, who hasn't gone this far out on a limb since his debut in 1976.

En attendant Cousteau (English title: Waiting for Cousteau) is the tenth studio album by French electronic musician and composer Jean-Michel Jarre, released on Disques Dreyfus, licensed to Polydor, in 11 June 1990. The album was dedicated to Jacques-Yves Cousteau and was released on his 80th birthday 11 June 1990. The album reached Number 14 in the UK charts.

En attendant Cousteau is an album released by Jean Michel Jarre in 1990 and it is dedicated to the world of waters, particularly to the blue planetary ocean and to the oceanology. The music from this album can be easily split into two different parts: the 1st one, represen. This album started so nice, but the title track "En Attendant Cousteau" (47:00 minutes) was a big disappointment! The Calypso-tracks are very nice, with steel-drums and nice feel.

this in my view started the hole thing about "Chill out" music or meditation music. Certainly a journey and a very different album from the early works. Rare on vinyl as this has not yet been re-pressed. I think this record will become very collectible in the years to come for this very reason
Uleran
JMJ goes reggae with shades of Rick Wakeman. Probably my least favourite album, and marked the end of the period where I would buy his albums religiously. Side B is more reflective. All tracks evoke a somewhat nautical feel to them.
Minha
Burned-out Jarre turning knobs on his pile of synths to produce toe-curlingly cheesy melodies inducing uncontrollable vomiting in any decent electronica fan. Stop at Zoolook in his body of work and thank me later.
Cezel
Fourteen years on from Oxygene finds JMJ's creativity on the downward spiral and the desire to integrate music and visuals into one creative whole eclipsing other considerations. This album should by rights be judged a weak affair but 25 years on from it's release my jury is still out.Track 1 is all 'show', you can see the ghost of Liberace looking over his shoulder and gurning at the camera all through this one. Calypso 2 and 3 are more serious and measured affairs but the standout track that stops the whole thing getting submerged is a rather good ambient piece in the same vein as Eno's 'Neroli', sombre and cool, worth having even if Calypso I - III are a little too 'populist'.
Bliss
Some say that this album is not JMJ's best work. It is different from his early work. I agree with that. But Calypso 2 is the best track on this. THat bass and laserharp tunes just make the song.Waiting for Cousteau is THE track that i play the most when i work or just relax.
Low_Skill_But_Happy_Deagle
Though the third part of Calypso is a bit of a let-down, Jarre shows his brilliance in full force in the massively long title track. On the first listen I found it to be the most boring thing ever ("Waiting for music" is what some people called it jokingly), but it quickly dawned on me just how ingenious this piece really is.Ambient in a nutshell, and in perfection - highly recommended!

A friend of mine has a rare Release of this cd album, he bought it in a shop in Australia when it hit the market in 1990 and on the disc label it says "Cousteau on the Beach" instead of "waiting for Cousteau". anyone else ever seen this release? It is definately not a bootleg!
Fountain_tenderness
Soemone of you wants to sell this "Cousteau on the beach"?
Agagamand
Yes, I own a copy on CD. Says it on the CD only, not the rear sleeve..
GoodBuyMyFriends
I agree - the fourth track, 'Waiting For Cousteau' is brilliant - bought the album when it came out, was a MASSIVE Jarre fan before that, wasn't sure about the album first off, as it was a total direction change from his earlier works, however, 22 years on and i still play it, always head straight to track 4 though!
Gavinranadar
@ adiscombug: I saw Jarre last week in Montreal and he used Waiting For Cousteau here too, around 24 years after your concert in London! It's a great choice for a warmup track. People who don't know it don't mind (it's just background music before he comes on stage), but for the real fans it's spine tingling. Thanks for the tip about that Rollercoaster remix, totally spot on.
Azago
I saw Jarre for his Chronologie tour at the old Wembley Stadium. They played track 4 for about an hour before the main event. Needless to say it had everyone waiting in keen anticipation. Clever!I love the surprise of track 2. Maybe that is Jarre's purpose though, to throw in an odd-ball to keep us on our toes?If you enjoyed track4, can I tempt you to listen to 'Rollercoaster (The Global Communication Yellow Submarine Re-Take)' by The Grid. Sublime remix, better than the original (most mixes of The Grid's are), with a hint of Vengelis (Bladerunner opening sequence) influences. Enjoy!
Rollers from Abdun
A real mixed bag here. I'm not a big Jarre fan, so my advice is get this just for track 4 which is one of the best chill-out tracks you are likely to hear (not something you'd think Jarre would produce).
Fiarynara
Definitely nowhere near his best work, but track 4 is sublime
