Indeed, Do to the Beast takes The Afghan Whigs to previously uncharted zones. That’s clear from the Lennonesque primal screaming announcing album opener Parked Outside – one of the hardest-rocking Whigs songs ever, propelled by a pile-driving riff that would make Malcolm Young envious. First single Algiers, meanwhile, hotwires a pounding Be My Baby drumbeat with spaghetti-western atmospherics. Europe, and Southern Hemisphere. But once the tour was over, so, apparently, were the Whigs.

The Afghan Whigs has always been Dulli’s more personal and confessional outlet while The Twilight Singers served as a more abstract and vague channel for his continued ruminations on morality and mortality, spirituality and sexuality. Since Dulli has weathered and aged through his Singers’ material, Do To The Beast is a decidedly more mature venture than the Whigs’ 1990s output, injecting it with a gravity and solemnity commensurate with Dulli’s current station in life. After such a layoff recording as The Afghan Whigs, and perhaps in deference to their past, Do To The Beast is fittingly a travelogue of sorts for Dulli.

Do to the Beast is the seventh studio album by American alternative rock band The Afghan Whigs, their first in 16 years. It was released on April 15, 2014 on Sub Pop Records, the same label that released their albums Up in It and Congregation.

Afghan Whigs' album, 'Do To The Beast', releases April 15, 2014. If you've spent 10 minutes in a conversation with me, you know a few simple things. I am from the Cincinnati area, love Skyline Chili and The Afghan Whigs. But before the Afghan Whigs and even Skyline Chili, there was soul in Cincinnati in the form of King Records, who released recordings from James Brown, Joe Tex, Hank Ballard and many, many more. As the '90s ushered in the heyday of "alternative" music, many bands seemed to adopt a sound to match their fashion  . Do To The Beast is a record many have waited 16 years for - and in my opinion, it is well worth the wait! It is a rock album for deep thinkers and deep feelers who like soul music.

For a band like The Afghan Whigs, though, who were always, as Dulli describes them, wildly out of step with their scene-serving up a mash of decadent soul and hard rock in their heyday while the masses ravenously gorged on grunge-a different type of offering feels inevitable. After all this time, a reinvention makes more sense than a rehash. While the Whigs sat dormant and hibernating, Dulli evolved and flourished creatively. Writing and recording a new album for a band once thought a long shot to ever reform is a different beast, though.
