Concentus Musicus Wien (CMW) is an Austrian baroque music ensemble based in Vienna. The CMW is recognized as a progenitor of the period-instrument performance movement. Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Alice Harnoncourt co-founded the CMW in 1953, along with several musicians from the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.

Telemann: Water Music, 3 Concertos. Competition is strong but this version from Harnoncourt and the Concentus Musicus Wien is my equal favourite along with that of Reinhard Goebel's Musica Antiqua Köln. The orchestral works - such as the Overtures, Suites and Conclusions of each of the three 'productions' – are given their full weight and meaning, with many subtleties, heartfelt and expressive touches, and a bit of rubato where appropriate. The double-dotted figures are snappy and forceful, as they should be in this French-style format. The instrumental playing is superb throughout, with Friedemann Immer playing his vital trumpet part in the second production perhaps better here than under any other director. These are pointed, characterful performances and you never get bored for a single moment.

Nikolaus Harnoncourt-Baroque Music Today Music as Speech Ways to a New Understanding of Music-Amadeus Pr (1995). Ornamentation in Baroque and Post-Baroque Music. With Special Emphasis on Johann Sebastian Bach (Frederick Neumann). Georg Philipp Telemann was above all the composer who brought about a fusion of the Italian and French styles in northern Germany. Telemann was far and away the most famous composer of his time. In today's historical outlook we hardly think of the artist as a practitioner who must satisfy the voracious appetite of his contemporaries for art to meet the needs of their daily lives. Some all too quickly resort to the pejorative term "Vielschreiber," with which they casually disparage the overwhelming creativity of many a Baroque artist.

Orchestra: Vienna Concentus Musicus. Conductor: Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Composer: Georg Philipp Telemann. Audio CD (April 5, 1994). Telemann: Darmstadt Overtures is a 1994 Teldec recording under the direction of Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Mr Harnoncourt leads the Concentus musicus Wien. The original recordings were recorded in 1967 and 1980 and was released on CD in 1994. Klaus Keil wrote the music and these have been translated into English by Alfred Clayton.
