Mind Games is the fourth studio album by John Lennon. It was recorded at Record Plant Studios in New York in summer 1973. The album was released in the US on 29 October 1973 and in the UK on 16 November 1973. It was Lennon's first self-produced recording without help from Phil Spector.
After the hostile reaction to the politically charged Sometime in New York City, John Lennon moved away from explicit protest songs and returned to introspective songwriting with Mind Games. Lennon didn't leave politics behind - he just tempered his opinions with humor on songs like "Bring on the Lucie (Freda Peeple)," which happened to undercut the intention of the song. It also indicated the confusion that lies at the heart of the album. Lennon doesn't know which way to go, so he tries everything
John Lennon’s 1973 album Mind Games, touched on many themes and vignettes from John’s life – but this time avoided overtly political themes. Published on. May 28, 2015. It features a classic saxophone solo from Michael Brecker on one of his earliest sessions. As with just about every Lennon solo album, his love for the music that inspired him is ever present. Tight A$’ with shades of 1950s rockabilly and country-rock picking is one of Mind Games’ nods to his formative years. Shortly after Mind Games was released, John, along with May Pang, moved from New York to live in Los Angeles and the period that has come to be called ‘The Lost Weekend’ began. As such, this album can almost be looked at as a Friday night, after a long week’s hard work.

John Lennon's fourth solo album, Mind Games, was recorded at the beginning of the Lost Weekend, his separation from Yoko Ono. It showed Lennon moving away from the politics of Some Time In New York City, and a return to more introspective songwriting. Using many of the same session musicians Ono had employed on Feeling The Space, Lennon entered New York's Record Plant East studio to begin work on the album. Mind Games was completed within a period lasting around two weeks, with Lennon producing himself. Significantly, the period also marked the beginning of Lennon's 16-month separation from Yoko Ono, and the start of his relationship with May Pang and the time he later dubbed the Lost Weekend.
