The Baltimore Symphony plays with the utmost conviction and really rocks, and the finale of Enigma, with a very well balanced optional organ part thrown in, is a sonic showcase. In fact, Telarc's sound is the best this music has ever been offered, with an especially impressive deep bass extension. There are many fine recordings of the Enigma Variations, but this one deserves an honored place in your collection.

The Baltimore Symphony isn't the best American orchestra, but they play competently, without any glaring inaccuracies. Perhaps Zinman is glad he doesn't have a powerhouse orchestra under his baton. He's going for relaxed, cozy Elgar that doesn't disturb us, much less leave us on the verge of tears. We're at a Sunday picnic in sweltering July. No mystery haunts us, no nostalgia, just the joy of nice music played by a fine orchestra. Zinman conducts the Variations smoothly and rather as a whole (incidentally, there is only one 30-minute track here and not the usual 15 tracks). The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is very stately, even in the very loud parts, and never overblown. They are still able to create large volumes of sound, but always in a controlled manner.

Opulent Warm Lyrical. David Zinman, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Elgar: Enigma Variations; Cockaigne Overture.

With the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, he was principal guest conductor for two years before becoming the orchestra's music director in 1985. During his Baltimore tenure, he began to implement ideas from the historically informed performance movement in his interpretations of the Beethoven symphonies. At the end of his Baltimore tenure in 1998, Zinman was named the orchestra's conductor laureate. However, in protest at what he saw as the Baltimore orchestra's overly conservative programming in the years since his departure, he renounced that title in 2001.
