Berliner Ellen Allien clearly doesn't view boundaries in quite the same way as many of her techno peers. Using terms like "fearless" to describe musicians who cycle through contrasting styles in their career often comes across as lazy shorthand for competency- the music rarely eclipses its obvious influences. Allien has occasionally veered close to that space, although mostly there's a strong feeling of immersion in the genres she splintered off into in works like Sool and Dust. LIsm, a single track that clocks in at 45-minutes, is her most fractured work to date, a piece.

Ellen Allien (born 1968 as Ellen Fraatz) is a German electronic musician, music producer, and the founder of BPitch Control music label. Her album Stadtkind was dedicated to the city of Berlin, and she cites the culture of reunified Berlin as one of the main inspirations for her music. She sings in both German and English. Her music is best described as a blend of IDM and Techno music, which is dance-floor oriented and has noticeable experimental elements. She currently lives in Berlin.

But see, every Allien album is just what it is: an album, but without a real connection between subsequent releases. Sure, some typical Allien-esque features always re-appear: she has always shown to have a knack for combining her rather mechanical electronic beats with, for lack of a better word, poppyness. Sadly enough, each of her previous albums had some great tracks to offer but were not able to sustain the same quality during the course of the whole listen.
While listening to Ellen Allien's LISm, it helps to realize that the project that spawned it was inspired by elliptical writing, cut-up cinema, and other art forms where deconstruction is another means of creation.
