Unlike Juilliard, where a jury of three decided whether I would maintain my scholarship, here there was a jury of one. Never was there a more harsh critic of my work than me.

The Way We Were (оригинал Barbra Streisand). Какими мы были (перевод Татьяна Гурченко из Севастополя). Mem'ries light the corners of my mind. Воспоминания освещают уголки моего сознания -. Misty water-colored mem'ries of the way we were. Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind. Разбросаны фотографии с улыбками из прошлого, Smiles we gave to one another for the way we were. Can it be that it was all so simple then.

The Way We Were is the fifteenth studio album recorded by American vocalist Barbra Streisand. It was released on January 1, 1974 by Columbia Records. The record was compiled immediately following the commercial success of lead single "The Way We Were". A majority of the material on the album was meant for the singer's unreleased project The Singer while other songs included were previously released in prior years. The lead single ("The Way We Were") was released on September 27, 1973 and became a chart topper in both the United States and Canada. It was also the top-selling single in the former country in 1974. The second and final single, "All in Love Is Fair", was released in March 1974 and also charted in the two aforementioned countries.

Streisand's album was re-issued as "Barbra Streisand Featuring 'The Way We Were' and 'All In Love Is Fair. Despite the awkward title, Streisand's album went to and eventually sold over 2 million copies, far outselling the soundtrack. The film, single, and Streisand's album all went to Carol Kaye, who was a top session player in the '60s and '70s, played bass on this track. In a Songfacts interview with Kaye, she said it was one of her most memorable sessions, requiring a total of 33 takes It reached {for 1 week} on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart.

A captivating grabbag of Streisand works from The Belle of 14th Street and an unfinished album project called The Singer, tied together by the master title track, plus All in Love is Fair; What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?; Something So Right, and more! Signed to Columbia Records, she released her first album, The Barbra Streisand Album, in 1963. It became a Top Ten, gold-selling record, thus paving the way for Streisand's status as one of the best-selling recording artists of the early '60s. But despite three successful albums by early 1964, Streisand turned her back on potentially lucrative concert bookings in favor of a starring role in the Broadway show Funny Girl, in which she appeared for more than two years. In the '70s, Streisand successfully married her musical and film acting interests, first in The Way We Were, a hit film with a theme song that became her first number one single, and then with A Star Is Born, which featured her second number one single, "Evergreen," a song she co-wrote. From that point on, every album she released sold at least a million copies.
