I learned about Woody Herman in high school when I discovered the new young "herd". This LP was my first exposure as a young student of jazz to the great musicians who made up the early herds, such as Getz, Zoot, Don Lamond, Phil Wilson, etc. This is a fun session to be sure with great peformances by Getz on Early Autumn, Phil Wilson on Bijou, and the Four Brothers, Getz, Sims, Guiffre and Flip Phillips.

5 "The Young Thundering Herds", 1970–87. 6 Timeline of Woody Herman Bands. In the 1950s, the Third Herd went on a successful European tour. He was known for hiring the best young musicians and using their arrangements. In the early and mid 1960s, Herman gained a wider recognition by fronting one of. the most exciting Herds to date that featured future stellar names like Michael Moore, drummer Jake Hanna, tenor saxophonist Sal Nistico, trombonists Phil Wilson and Henry Southall and trumpeters like Bill Chase, Paul Fontaine and Dusko Goykovitch. To celebrate his 40th anniversary as a bandleader, Herman had a celebrated concert at Carnegie Hall. For the first half of the program he welcomed back many of his alumni including such veterans as tenors Flip Phillips, Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Jimmy Giuffre and Al Cohn, the Candoli brothers, trombonist Phil Wilson and singer Mary Ann McCall. Overall, the concert served as a loving tribute to a major jazz figure. The only major flaw was Herman's tendency to call out soloist's names before they finished playing, pretty much ruining this version of "Four Brothers.
