A Lament for Epirus, 1926-1928. A Lament for Epirus, 1926-1928. CD - Angry Mom Records 004CD).

Very few pre-war musicians have tapped deeper into the human soul than Zoumbas and this volume presents his most profoundly hypnotic and unearthly pieces, all recorded in New York City from 1926-1928. A deep set of notes is accompanied by previously unpublished photographs as well as original art-work by R. Crumb. Respectfully crafted by Christopher King and Susan Archie for Angry Mom Records

Alexis Zoumbas' expressions of longing are so raw and unmediated that I suspect anyone who has ever yearned for anything - who has ever gazed dolefully out a window, or sighed audibly over a cup of whiskey, or felt subsumed by a certain kind of ache - will feel these songs like a club to the back of the knees. They are immediate, destructive, and stunning. That Christopher King was able to collect and contain them for us is an extraordinary gift

The second album, A Lament for Epirus, 1926-1928, released in 2014, gathers a dozen recordings by a single musician from the region, violinist Alexis Zoumbas. The albums are clearly intended as complementary releases. Together, they showcase an essential part of the traditional rural demotic music repertoire in Epirus (urban music in Greece forms another genre of popular music, known as laiki). The recordings on both CDs are impeccably mastered-King's widely recognized engineering handiwork erased the age of the original 78-rpm records

The life story of Alexis Zoumbas and his extraordinary music is impossible to explain without some grasp of the term. He died alone in xenitia in a bleak 1940s Detroit, several worlds away from the balmy heat and music of his childhood. He grew up in the hinterlands of Epirus, Greece in the last decade of the 19th century. The captivating sound he elicits from his violin is descended directly from the ancient music the shepherds played for their flocks on their wooden flutes. The sound seems to occupy its own space. I’ve never heard anything like it.

I've owned two copies of this LP, both with a severe pressing defect on A3 that renders it completely unplayable. It's a real drag because the music is great. Anybody else have this issue?

Same thing with me : two copies, major pressing glitch on A3, had to return both. I gave up after that but would happily buy a repress with the problem fixed.
Ironfire
can you be more specific, what kind of severe pressing defect exactly is it? how does it look, how does it sound?have you contacted the label about this? what did they say?

Sorry to hear that... I bought this in the UK on month of release (From Honest Jons) and it plays beautifully, a great quality pressing with superb sound qulaity (thanks to Christopher King). And the music really is quite special!
