One of Brazil's most prominent writers of the 20th century, Jorge Amado, was born in the southeastern Bahian city of Itabuna, and resided for many years in Salvador

Gilberto Gil is an extraordinary person. He created a new wave of music, became the Godfather of Brazilian music genre Tropicalia and produced some of the best songs Brazil has seen. Aside from his significant musical background, he also had a powerful political career with a five-year reign as the Brazilian Minster of Culture. Brazilians love his music, especially with its deep roots in Bahian culture, acting as a representative of music from this region. However, his music is largely experimental and has evolved a long way from his first years as a musician when he combined samba and Northeastern music. One of the most famous of these African-inspired recordings was his album Refavela, which includes the reggae- influenced track, No Norte da Saudades. He Has Had A Successful Political Career Too.

In the early 1970s Gil participated in a resurgence of the Afro-Brazilian afoxé tradition in Carnaval, joining the Filhos de Gandhi (Sons of Gandhi) performance group, which only allowed black Brazilians to join. Gil also recorded a song titled "Patuscada de Gandhi" written about the Filhos de Gandhi that appeared on his 1977 album Refavela. Gil with former President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Gil describes his attitude towards politics thus: "I'd rather see my position in the government as that of an administrator or manager. He has had to walk a fine line, simultaneously remaining true to traditional Bahian styles and engaging with commercial markets.

International sensation Psy was welcomed to the Brazil Carnival of Salvador by Brazilian singer Claudia Leitte as part of her "electric trio" on Friday. At the start of the Salvador Carnival, which attracts two million annually and is often described as "the biggest street party in the world. As previously announced the singer of the hit single "Gangnam Style" appeared on the floats performing the choreography of the song with Leitte, Gilberto Gil and presenter Sabrina Sato. Welcome to the jungle," Leitte said in English.

The results made for Gil’s most experimental album and also his first hit, courtesy of the joyous samba Aquele Abraço. The swinging Salvadoran returns to Africa, via Jorge Ben’s modal Tuareg, catches a bucolic Bahian buzz with Gilberto Gil’s Cultura e Civilização, and reaffirms Ben’s countercultural recipe ( I have a VW beetle and a guitar ) in País Tropical. Expresso 2222 is the album Gil released to celebrate. As opposed to his previous records, the sound here is more minimal, squeezing the most out of acoustic guitars and simple percussion (a triangle features pretty prominently throughout). However, that doesn’t mean his vision isn’t still enormous.
