Dinosaur Jr. got a break with a record label and so Murph was offered the drumming job. The drums are beaten hard but he doesn't force any attraction, just going mostly with the flow of the compositions. He doesn't exhibit much pizzazz or embellishment, but his beats aren't absent. Then again most of the songs move with a relaxed and easygoing pace. Track number ten, Mirror, starts with the drums playing a mixed combination of beat tones. The guitar strums out a high note series of chords in the fashion of eighties blues rock. The album's title, Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not, sounds like a challenge of irony. In turn they themselves show influences of other genres that they're not associated with. They borrowed some melodies from David Bowie, who is classified under glam rock. Some of the vocal lilts sound similar to Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, which is a grunge band.

Dinosaur Jr.

Arriving four years after 2012's I Bet on Sky - the longest stretch of time between albums since Dinosaur Jr. became an active band again in 2007 - Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not doesn't offer any surface surprises, at least not along the lines of the roaring reunion of 2007's Beyond, or the keyboard colorings of. I Bet on Sky. That's not to say Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not doesn't surprise, because it does - namely, it shocks by sounding as vital as Dinosaur Jr. ever has.

Alt-rock greats Dinosaur Jr. have announced plans to release their 11th studio album, Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not, arriving on August 5 via Jagjaguwar. Black Flag legend Henry Rollins introduced the follow-up to 2012’s I Bet on Sky in a video which you can find below, along with the new record’s latest cover art, track list, and Dinosaur J. s tour dates. As the group's career progressed, it turned into a vehicle for J Mascis' songwriting and playing, which had the ultimate result of turning Dinosaur's albums into largely similar affairs

I would say the sound of this record is... okay. It certainly isn't what I would expect from a contemporary album pressed in 2016, during a period where labels should be capitalizing on a resurgence of interest in vinyl. It's interesting to read the comments of other reviewers. I found the bass frequencies overwhelming, while another reviewer said the drums and bass on his/her copy were "almost nonexistent." Another reviewer said his/her copy was "flat and quiet," which I interpreted as a positive review, but I hear frequent pops and a lot of surface noise, particularly in the fade outs. Additionally, I would say the songs on my copy of the record are unquestionably less dynamic than the digital files. To be clear, I'm not disagreeing with anyone else's review; rather, I'm offering an honest review of how my particular copy sounds. I have been streaming this record since it was released and only recently picked up the LP, and I can honestly say streaming this album is a superior experience to my vinyl pressing, which is not an argument you'll hear me make often. After reading a reply to one of the reviews that suggests there are frequent problems with Jagjaguwar LPs, I will probably think twice about purchasing their releases in the future. I also own Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago, and I found that record to have a lot of surface noise, too.

I had this on blue vinyl but got rid of it because I initially didn't think it sounded great but because I love the songs on this album so much, I found this version and decided to give it another try. Like I originally thought, this isn't the best sounding recording. It doesn't sound compressed or distorted, it just lacks a certain punch that would totally lend itself to the high energy, high volume music of Dino Jr. While the drums have a natural sounding resonance, they definitely lack the punchiness that would enhance the intensity of the music by light years. The vocals are the most prominent feature of the recording and because of this the music suffers, sounding more faint, more distant than would be desired from a band like this. The bass is atrocious, kinda just a muffled blur in the background. If the induvidual instruments were given more definition and clarity this record would sound so much better. Odd because this was mastered at Sterling and I'm usually a big fan of their work but the balance on this one is off. Have to stick with my original sentiments, this album just sounds lackluster on vinyl. You have to turn the volume way up on this for it to sound even halfway decent (and I'm talking like a quarter further on the dial)

My copy is flat and quiet. The sound is Dinosaur Jr so you have to expect the guitars louder than anything else. That is who they are.

So there were 596 copies pressed for Amoeba? Why not 600?
Silly Dog
Great pressing. Sounds really, um, clear. Highly recommend. Ray Janos @ Sterling.
Jeb
Really a shame sounds like most releases from this label...... Utter crap
Blackstalker
A real disappointment. I knew it was wrong the minute i put the needle on the record. The sound is lifeless, which is a crime considering the band. Can you send a record back for bad mastering?
Hystana
3 stars = 5 for music and 1 for the master

I have to agree, my purple copy sounds miserable. It's almost like the grabbed some low-bit rate MP3s and slapped them on an upload to Uncle Bob's discount record pressing service. This was an impulse buy, having last heard D. Jr. in the 90s and enjoying them. I like the music, but I'm afraid this won't be getting much play...

I have the purple edition. It sounds terrible if I'm honest. It's flat most of the time, the levels go absolutely all over the place. It's a total mess and sounds rushed.Seems to me like no one even bothered to check the test pressings before authorising it to be pressed.Such a shame as it's another good album. The whole package is poor really. Just feels really cheap. Stick to the CD or digital version.
Mullador
Got the clear blue vinyl, very disappointed in the way it sounds, definitely flat, the kick drum has no punch, the bass is kinda muffled and j's guitar isn't separated enough, the vocals are really loud and the music just kind of forms a blur of sound in the background, wouldn't opt for this album on vinyl

It's a very...ahem...DEEP purple. On first sight I thought I'd got a black one by mistake. Sounds OK, though I'd agree with what others have said about a rather flat sound. Not terrible, and no obvious surface noise. I've heard a lot worse.
Ganthisc
Mine doesn't have a ton of crackles and pops, but it most definitely is very flat. Dinosaur Jr. music is very loud and in your face, so the fact that I'm playing it at quite a loud volume but I'm not feeling punched makes me sad...
Felolak
I just picked up the purple vinyl variant, have read that it sounds a bit flat, but sounds ok to me, I just had to crank it up a couple more notch's than usual. Fave tracks so far are the opener 'Goin' Down' and 'I Walk For Miles' is a heavy epic! Fantastic artwork on this one too..
Modifyn
Drums and bass are almost nonexistent on my copy. Must have the J Mascis screaming guitars mix. Too bad. Digital files sound great.
Leniga
I wonder if Jagjaguwar realize they are getting a bad rep in the Vinyl community. Every release has problems.
Blackseeker
My copy is so warped, the needle won't even stay in the groove. I'm glad it hasn't been damaged. Sent an e-mail to Jagjaguwar, no reply, not even a short apology. Will never buy their products again.

Does anyone know if the black edition sounds better than the purple one? The purple is indeed kind of disappointing. Too much Background noise, not loud enough, thin sounding... Doesn't do the band a favour!
Syleazahad
The black edition has the exact same problems. Very much background noise - which would be okay if the vinyl wouldn't be so extremely quiet and flat. Very sad for an otherwise great record.
Ber
I haven't heard the purple version, but have the black version and master is pretty poor. I didn't notice a background noise issue, but definitely sounds thin.
Ka
I Agree with the below. The Sound quality is poor. Very flat sounding recording.
Barinirm
The mastering for the vinyl release is pretty bad... Sounds super flat.
Trash Obsession
Do you mind me asking what your set-up includes? Meaning, turntable > cartridge > phono > amp > speakers? And also what you mean by 'flat.' On my set-up (without going into detail, it's a fairly high-end system) it sounds good but very 'muted,' meaning I have to crank the volume. It's just quiet. I wouldn't call it flat though.
Madi
Too bad Dinosaur Jr. released this vinyl on such a lousy label (Jagjaguwar) known for consistent shitty pressings. forcing my hand to buy the cd 'cause the music sounds great! come on J & co. find a better label to release your vinyl on! do it for your vinyl lovin' fan base...

Why hasn't Newbury Comics issue been listed yet. Has it been released yet ?
Ylonean
I was looking forward to my blue version. Put it on, and it sounds absolutely lifeless it's so flat.I have to crank it right up to get anything, and then it feels even more disappointing. The sound is just mush - I went back to listening to it on Spotify for gods sake :( Now I know why they have copies left.Wish I had read the reviews first. Shame on them for such a bad release. Btw, I had just before this bought the yellow copy of Bug from Jagjaguar and that is fine. So they can do it right if they want to. I have to crank up Bug a bit, but it's nothing like the the disappointment this album is. Avoid.Sure is pretty though....
Legionstatic
I just added it...I'm not sure why it didn't appear under the master release.
romrom
750 copies just? it doesn't seems like that, seeing almost 30 times this certain vinyl for sale.
I ℓ٥ﻻ ﻉ√٥υ
Even fewer copies of the clear blue Amoeba exclusive pressed. Don't sleep, whatever your colour selection is!
