One magpie at the birth of Jesus, perhaps presaging sorrow for Mary: Piero della Francesca's Nativity. The rhyme has its origins in superstitions connected with magpies, considered a bird of ill omen in some cultures, and in Britain, at least as far back as the early sixteenth century. The rhyme was first recorded around 1780 in a note in John Brand's Observations on Popular Antiquities on Lincolnshire with the lyric: One for sorrow, Two for mirth, Three for a funeral And four for birth. One for sorrow, Two for mirth Three for a funeral, Four for birth Five for heaven Six for hell Seven for the devil, his own self. British folk group the Unthanks include the song "Magpie" on their 2015 album Mount the Air, with lyrics containing portions of this rhyme

Style Golden Ale, Blond Ale. Brewed by Magpie. Cask conditioned at The Great Central Railway Beer Festival '17, Loughborough, Leics. Gold with white head. There is a flowery bitterness to this, quite drying, reasonably crisp.
One's for sorrow, two's for joy Three's for a girl, and four's for a boy Five's for silver, six for gold Seven's for a secret, never told Devil, devil, I defy thee Devil, devil, I defy thee Devil, devil, I defy thee. Oh, the Magpie brings us tidings Of news both fair and foul. She's more cunning than the Raven, More wise than any Owl. For she brings us news of the harvest; Of the barley, wheat, and corn. And she knows when we'll go to our graves, And how we shall be born
Indeed the magpie is a very magickal bird. It is a corvid, like a raven or a crow, and many of the folklore associated with these originated with the Magpie including the traditional "counting crows" children's rhyme. There are several versions including the following: 1. One for sorrow, Two for joy, Three for a girl, Four for a boy, Five for silver, Six for gold, Seven for a secret, Never to be told. And. One for sorrow, Two for mirth, Three for a wedding, And four for death. One for sorrow, Two for luck; (or mirth) Three for a wedding, Four for death; (or birth) Five for.
