David Rodigan and Sting International do an amazing job selecting on this one. I'm just diving into the raggae sound and this album is perfect for an introduction. I have heard some of these tunes before and since and not at this quality. If you don't own it, get it. I now have it on cd and record. I have had this album for over a year now and I still play the snot out of it. Supprisingly high quality sound. Many of these are 70's-80's era and recording equipment in the islands was rare and typically poor quality

David Rodigan is explaining the rules of a reggae soundclash to me. He is doing it with breathless enthusiasm, but it is still taking quite a long time because, as it turns out, the rules of a reggae soundclash are a thing of byzantine complexity. I’d always assumed that it was just a matter of two DJs each battling to win over a crowd by playing better records than each other, with a heavy emphasis on dubplates (specially recorded tracks with vocals that mention the DJ by name). On the other, there’s something about meeting Rodigan in person that brings home rather forcefully what a deeply improbable state of affairs this all is. He looks, as he cheerfully admits, like a bank manager. Roy Richards’ Contact: amazing harmonica playing, I first heard it on an album called Club Ska 67, but it originally came out on a label called Doctor Bird.

Reggae legend David Rodigan return to Radio 2, bringing a spot of Jamaican sunshine to the cold British nights. Showcasing his love for all types of reggae music David will have an hour of classic roots, ska and reggae music from the '60s to the present day. Expect to hear a carefully selected a mix of evergreen classics and glorious obscurities to brighten up your Monday evenings. This week David focuses on some of the great reggae cover versions through the ages.
If you aren't familiar with David Rodigan, he's a BBC Radio DJ who looks like a stockbroker but rocks the reggae like a straight-up Jamaican. His taste is excellent and covers all eras, plus he's a combination populist/advocate for reggae like Leonard Bernstein was for classical music or Carl Sagan for astronomy. This compilation for the BBE label features "tracks which encompass the positive aspects of real authentic reggae. Also in the liner notes, Rodigan notes that many of these cuts have fallen into obscurity, and through no fault of their own.
The Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album is an award presented at the Grammy Awards, a ceremony that was established in 1985 and originally called the Gramophone Awards, to recording artists for quality works in the reggae music genre.
