It's Sad to Belong" is a song written by Randy Goodrum and performed by England Dan & John Ford Coley on their 1977 album, Dowdy Ferry Road. Called a "timeless classic", it peaked at on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and on the easy listening chart. It was one of the earlier pop hits in Goodrum's career. It's Sad to Belong" was released in May 1977 through Big Tree Records, with the b-side "The Time Has Come"

England Dan & John Ford Coley were an American soft rock duo composed of Danny Wayland "England Dan" Seals and John Edward "John Ford" Coley, active throughout the 1970s. Native Texans, they are best known for their 1976 single, "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight", a No. 2 pop hit and No. 1 Adult Contemporary hit. After they disbanded, Seals began performing as Dan Seals and launched a country music career through the 1980s which produced 11 No. 1 country hits.

John Ford Coley recalled in a classicbands. com interview: "They got really ticked at us because the house band was playing 'Sad To Belong. They were playing it slow and finally about half way through the song I stopped it and man, they were pissed at me, because you don't do that. This is a 'live' show. We never got asked back. laughs) It was so slow, they were taking seven minutes to do a two minute song. This was a hit on the Easy Listening/Adult Contemporary chart. Thomas covered this on his 1977 self-titled album

It's Sad to Belong" was written by Randy Goodrun who would hit two years later with Anne Murray's version of "Broken Hearted M. Dan Seals and John Coley recorded "Broken Hearted Me" as well for 1979's uneven Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive, and it would have fit perfectly in this melancholy setting. Outside of Parker McGee's "Where Do I Go From Here" and the aforementioned "It's Sad to Belong," the Dowdy Ferry Road album was entirely written or co-written by the singers.
