After the break-up, Moynihan retreated into obscurity, continuing to perform occasionally, but rarely recording. 254 Irvine and Brady toured together as a duo and, in August 1976, recorded an album at the Rockfield Studios, Andy Irvine/Paul Brady,:243–247 produced by Lunny who also plays on most tracks, and with Kevin Burke on fiddle. For a while, Irvine continued to tour with Brady in Ireland and in the UK, and also with Mick Hanly, predominantly in Europe. From 18 to 30 June 1979, Planxty recorded their fourth album, After the Break, at the Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin, produced by Lunny and released on the Tara Records label. 262–267 Molloy would leave the group to join The Chieftains shortly after the album was recorded,:268 and remains with them to this day. In between the Planxty. activity, Irvine squeezed in tours in Europe with Lunny, Mick Hanly and Gerry O'Beirne.

This hour-long live album treat, recorded on 24th April 1979 at Bremen University (Germany) by Radio Bremen, captures the original Planxty lineup (. Andy Irvine, Christy Moore, Liam O’Flynn & Dónal Lunny), reunited (effectively re-created ) for a monster (58-date) spring-1979 tour (in other words, pre-dating – by just a week! – studio sessions for the After. The Break album, for which much of the material performed on the tour – eight out of the twelve selections on this live set, in fact – was re-recorded). The foursome was augmented on this tour by the Bothy Band’s master flautist.

Although Planxty is nominally the first album by the band, all four members performed together on Christy Moore's previous album Prosperous, which opened with the same track, "Raggle Taggle Gypsy/Tabhair dom do Lámh". An earlier recording of "Sí Bheag, Sí Mhór" had been included as a b-side to Planxty's first single, "Three Drunken Maidens"

After The Break is the fourth studio album by the Irish folk music band Planxty, recorded at Windmill Lane Studios from 18 to 30 June 1979 and released the same year. The album was produced by Lunny and engineered by Brian Masterson, who had worked with the band since their earliest shows

After the break is another great Planxty album. Highly recommended if you like "traditional irish" music. With Andy's mandolin, I'm not sure how "traditional" it is, but it is far more interesting to me than the "celtic" music you commonly see around in stores. A fantastic album, as Planxty jostles for the position of best traditional Irish band ever. As technically proficient as any group anywhere, a well produced album which will be treasured by all folk and Irish afficianados. 8 people found this helpful.
