The first four discs offer Sons of the Pioneers as a quartet, Bob Nolan, Tim Spencer, Len Slye, and Hugh Farr in their first flourish of success, beginning in August of 1934. The performances here are different from, and usually more spirited than, the group's Decca recordings. Way Out There" is a number that the group cut commercially several times over as its lineup changed, but it never sounded fresher than the version here. Get on the Golden Train. The Sons of the Pioneers.
The Sons of the Pioneers represent the pinnacle of great American folk-singing, and the 2-cd "The Essential Collection" from Varese captures them at their basic, "primal" best (in 1941)--with 6 singers, 2 guitars, bass and fiddle. That's all that they ever needed to create their great art. Having said that, "LET'S GO WEST", which features their work from 1943-54, contains some truly fabulous stuff. Only if you are a long-time, true fan of The Sons Of The Pioneers will you know that "Festus" of Gun Smoke fame, was one of the early singers in this great group. Ken Curtis (Festus) sang from 1949-1953 and you will hear his voice on this album. Sick back, put up your feet, build a fire in your fire place, turn the lights down low and let the SOPs take you on a ride through the old west. It will be an evening to enjoy and remember.
