Symonds started playing clarinet as a teenager and was during his service in the Royal Canadian Navy in Halifax 1938-45 member of a Dixieland band led by Bucky Adams. From 1945 to 1948 he studied clarinet, piano, music theory and harmony at the Conservatory of Toronto and then took private composition lessons with Gordon Delamont. After a five-month journey through Canada, the three ten-part CBC Radio series Travelling Big Lonely with Symonds emerged as an author and storyteller, as well as compositions that reflected his impressions of the landscape and nature of Canada as Big Lonely (1975 ), The Story of a wind, The Land, Four Images of Nature, Forest and Sky and From the Eye of. the Wind. Furthermore, Symonds wrote radio plays and stage music, several operas and incidental music for young people like Laura and the Lieutenant (1974) and Sam (1976).

Produced by Harrison and Lynne, the album has a wonderfully warm sound that is both high-tech and rootsy. Recorded at the home studios of Harrison, Dylan and Wilbury family friend Dave Stewart, Volume One has little in common with most recorded supersessions, which tend to be less than the sum of their parts; rather, it recalls the inspired mix-and-match musical fellowship found in the best moments of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame jam sessions. Still a great album after all these years! Whether you’re new to the Wilburys or remember when it first came out like me it is a very enjoyable record to listen to. I was always a big fan of these guys as individuals so as a group there was no way you could go wrong. Check out You Tube on how the band got together, very good.

The Traveling Wilburys was big enough to convince the group to record a second album, cheerfully and incongruously titled Vol. 3, two years later despite the death of Orbison. Like most sequels, the second didn't live up to expectations, and by the time it and its predecessor drifted out of print in the mid-'90s, with the rights reverting to Harrison, nobody much noticed.
