Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer) is a song cycle by Gustav Mahler on his own texts. The cycle of four Lieder for medium voice (often performed by women as well as men) was written around 1884–85 in the wake of Mahler's unhappy love for soprano Johanna Richter, whom he met while conductor of the opera house in Kassel, Germany, and orchestrated and revised in the 1890s.

Fischer-Dieskau’s complete solo Mahler recordings for Deutsche Grammophon (the three major song cycles and five songs accompanied by Karl Engel on the piano) are now brought together on a single CD for the first time. Mahler was a composer in which Fischer-Dieskau excelled. Few can rival him in his range and beauty of tone in conveying the heartache of the young traveller in the Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. Kubelik is a most persuasive Mahlerian too, and the 1968 sound is quite excellent
