Promise At Dawn (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (LP, Album). 2393 016. Georges Delerue. Promise At Dawn (La Promesse De L'Aube) (LP, Album).
Original soundtrack from the 1970 movie directed by Jules Dassin Starring Melina Mercouri, Assaf Dayan, Didier Haudepin. A premiere on compact disc for a vintage soundtrack that has everything to please lovers of poignant and carefully orchestrated melodies, by a giant in his field who was called by many people "Mr. Film Music" : Georges Delerue. A charming and melodically strong work, typical of its composer.

Rated PG. Roger Ebert. Jules Dassin's "Promise at Dawn" is a warmly drawn love poem in two parts, one dealing with style and the other with the story. Of the two, the first is more interesting: Dassin's treatment of his wife, Melina Mercouri, is a marriage of script, photography and performance designed to showcase her talent and beauty.

Filmed in different styles (sometimes like a silent movie) in which it tries to reproduce the Twenties setting. The music by the usual dependable Delerue is also a disappointment. 5 out of 17 found this helpful.
Georges Delerue (1925-1992) composed over 350 film and television scores, working with François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Bernardo Bertolucci, Oliver Stone and more. He brought a lush, elegiac sensitivity to art-house auteurs of his native France and an elegant, often minimalist temperance to major Hollywood films in America.
