The Jazz Messengers were an influential jazz combo that existed for over thirty-five years beginning in the early 1950s as a collective, and ending when long-time leader and founding drummer Art Blakey died in 1990. Blakey led or co-led the group from the outset. Art Blakey" and "Jazz Messengers" became synonymous over the years, though Blakey did lead non-Messenger recording sessions and played as a sideman for other groups throughout his career.

The Jazz Messengers were a jazz band that existed with varying personnel for 35 years. Their discography consists of 47 studio albums, 21 live albums, 2 soundtracks, 6 compilations, and one boxed set. Drummer Art Blakey was the leader or co-leader of the group throughout its existence. He is the drummer on all Jazz Messengers recordings and is therefore elided from personnel listings

Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers - A La Mode. By the time this album was released in 1961, Art Blakey (now 40 years old) was working with a very prolific line-up featuring "Jazz Messengers" Wayne Shorter (who would soon become the musical director of the group) on tenor sax, Jymie Merritt on bass, Lee Morgan on trumpet and Bobby Timmons on piano. Trombone star Curtis Fuller, brought in especially for this album (and featured on his own composition "Alamode"), soon became a working member of the Messengers as well

These five Art Blakey albums were recorded between 1960 and 1964, a period of intense creativity for the brilliant drummer and the Jazz Messengers. Blakey’s drum solo on the title track is excellent, as is Shorter’s playing on ‘El Toro’. By November 1961 and the recording of, Buhaina’s Delight, Morgan had been replaced by a young Freddie Hubbard, and in addition to Merritt, and Wayne shorter this new version of the Messengers included, Curtis Fuller (trombone) and Cedar Walton (piano).
