Horace Andy (born Horace Hinds, 19 February 1951) is a Jamaican roots reggae songwriter and singer, known for his distinctive vocals and hit songs such as "Government Land", as well as "Angel", "Spying Glass" and "Five Man Army" with English trip hop duo Massive Attack. He is also famous for a cover version of "Ain't No Sunshine". The association with the producer was brought to an abrupt end when DaSilva was murdered in 1979. Andy's 1978 album Pure Ranking had anticipated the rise of dancehall reggae, and he was a key figure in the early development of the genre, confirmed by 1982's Dance Hall Style album. Andy continued to record with a variety of producers in.

In a way, Pure Ranking is Andy’s modal album. Tracks that at first appear monotonous are actually designed to let Andy find total freedom in his singing. The album didn’t produce any lasting hits on par with Skylarking, because the melodies aren’t as well-defined. Instead, we get the chants and proclamations of What Eyes Don’t See, Modern Babylon," and Strictly Ranking. At the tail end of the '70s, Horace Andy coproduced an album entitled Pure Ranking with King Tubby and Brad Osbourne. The album’s loose, midtempo rhythms are markedly different from Andy’s definitive mid-'70s recordings with Bunny Lee, which were extremely precise. The loose, almost weary playing not only reflects Andy’s state of mind at the end of '70s (an era in which turmoil in Kingston reached a boiling point) but also gives him free reign in conducting his vocal.

Horace Andy has always been a catalyst for new trends, and in 1978 Pure Rankin was cut for the Clocktower label and subsequently created raggamuffin and a new modern dancehall sound that was unanimously influential on the Jamaican scene. The track "Black Cinderella" was a single that defined this new wave and thus became a classic. Along with Skylarking, this is a crucial Horace Andy recording. Fans of the golden voice are strongly advised to seek it out. Track Listing.
